What are dental implants?
A dental implant offers a permanent solution for missing teeth. It replaces the tooth roots with a titanium screw that serves as the foundation for the replacement tooth.
A dental implant is a welcome option as it looks, feels, and performs the way natural teeth do. There's no shifting, sliding, or moving around to worry about. You can smile, speak, laugh, and eat with confidence.
At Embrace Dental, we’re happy to offer dental implants to patients that are looking for options to match their natural teeth.
Why you may need a dental implant
Dental implants are surgically screwed into the jawbone. You may consider getting an implant if you:
- Want a fixed replacement for missing teeth
- Have healthy teeth and gums
- Have a fully-developed and adequate jawbone to support the implant
- Are in good overall health
- Aren't smoking or have no habits that may affect the success of the procedure
- Aren’t comfortable with dentures
What happens during a dental implant procedure
Before
Getting a comprehensive oral examination is necessary to find out if dental implants are suitable for your case.
Your dentist may take your X Rays. They also gather information about your health history, which includes any medical conditions and prescriptions you may have.
You and your dentist work together to customize a treatment plan to address your oral health needs and concerns.
If you're proceeding with an implant procedure, you also need to plan your transportation. The use of sedation or general anesthesia can affect your mobility for the day.
During
Your dentist removes any remaining tooth in the surgical site and leaves the area to heal.
If the area is empty and there's adequate jawbone to support the implant, your dentist then places the metal post, covers it, and lets it heal. This can take up to six months depending on your body’s response. This is also why it’s crucial to be in good general health for the procedure.
During this time, your dentist also monitors the site to see if it's healing properly. Once it's all healed, your dentist proceeds to place the abutment to the implant.
The gum is allowed to heal again and once it's ready, your dentist attaches the replacement tooth or crown to it.
After
Getting implants is a surgical procedure that requires multiple dental visits. How long the process goes varies per individual. The faster the gums heal, the shorter the treatment duration is, too.
Once the procedure is complete, your dental team provides you with aftercare instructions, including prescriptions, to help you recover fast and smoothly.
Are dental implants safe?
Dental implants are a common dental procedure. But since it's a surgery, it does come with safety risks. These risks, however, are rare and minor.
For instance, the site may become infected or structures may get damaged. This is why you and your dental team coordinate closely before, during, and after the procedure to ensure you're all set for it.
Here at Embrace Dental, our General Dentist, Dr. Khodabakhsh, has a special interest in dental restorations. Our entire team also works with you every step of the way to help you make an informed decision for your oral health and ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
